Dr Josie Jenkinson

Consultant Psychiatrist for Older People

I am Dr. Josie Jenkinson, a Consultant Psychiatrist for Older People and Deputy Director for Research and Development at Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. I currently help to lead the award winning Psychiatric Liaison Service at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals, where I support older adults experiencing complex mental health needs in the hospital setting. My clinical practice is rooted in a compassionate, evidence-based approach, with a focus on delivering care that is both safe and person-centred.

Alongside my clinical responsibilities, I have several leadership roles, including serving on the executive of the Faculty of Old Age Psychiatry at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and as a founder of the Old Age Liaison Psychiatry Network. I am also an honorary senior clinical lecturer with Imperial College London. I support and deliver research, teach, publish regularly, and contribute to shaping mental health policy for older populations.

My interests include service development, delirium and dementia care pathways, and improving communication skills training for clinicians. I believe that high standards of care require equally high standards of collaboration, reflection, and innovation.

Areas of Expertise

Delirium and Dementia Pathways
I lead on clinical care and research focused on improving assessment, treatment, and continuity of care for patients with cognitive disorders in acute hospital settings.

Liaison Psychiatry & Integrated Care
I specialise in supporting older people with mental health difficulties linked to physical illness or hospitalisation. My work spans the interface between medical and psychiatric services, supporting safe and timely discharges.

Research

I am a Principal Investigator or Sub-Investigator on multiple research studies, including clinical trials into new disease modifying treatments for people with dementia. I am a member of several research programme steering groups including the Dementia Platforms UK Trial Delivery Framework.

I mentor junior doctors, contribute to national education resources, and I am a frequent speaker at professional conferences and academic panels.

My Approach

I aim to provide thoughtful, holistic and collaborative care that recognises the unique needs of older people and their families. Whether supporting someone with acute delirium, managing transitions out of hospital, or advising on complex decision-making, I work to ensure each person’s dignity and preferences are central to their care.
