Dr Harry Reid

Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist

“Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore” (Andre Gide)

I am Dr. Harry Reid, a Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist and specialist Addictions Psychiatrist. I am recognised by both the General Medical Council and the Royal College of Psychiatrists for my expertise in supporting people with alcohol, drug, and behavioural addictions and hold a Certificate of Specialist Training in Addictions/Substance Misuse. I also hold GMC and RCPsych certification in Liaison Psychiatry, a branch of medicine operating at the interface of physical and mental health.

I strongly believe in the need for a deep understanding of relationships and relational patterns in order to work with mental health and addictive disorders. I therefore undertook a five-year training in group-analytic psychotherapy as well as undertaking an advanced training in Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP), a model developed to treat difficulties with personality and personal functioning. I have been delivering both individual psychodynamic psychotherapy and group-analytic psychotherapy at St Pancras Hospital for the past four years.

My practice is grounded in collaboration and psychological formulation. I aim to create a space where patients feel heard, respected, and supported. This can allow the opportunity for shared curiosity and thinking to develop in our work together.

I have held senior roles across multiple London NHS trusts, providing clinical leadership in community mental health and homelessness outreach teams. Moreover, as the substantive consultant psychiatrist, I was clinical lead for borough-wide specialist psychotherapy services, which comprised multiple psychotherapy treatment streams including trauma therapies; complex anxiety and depression teams; and systemic family therapy services.

Lastly, I enjoy teaching in a wide range of contexts including delivering specialist workshops at the Royal Society of Medicine and as academic lecturer to doctoral students in Counselling Psychology at Middlesex University.

Areas of Expertise

Addiction & Lifestyle Psychiatry

I have experience of working in drug addiction services, alcohol services, and specialist behavioural addiction services such as the National Centre for Gaming Disorders. Through my background in group-based psychotherapies, I have an understanding of the central role of group treatment in addiction recovery and the power of peer-support communities.

The dialogue between self-defeating lifestyles and mental ill health is compellingly articulated in addictive disorders. As a Liaison Psychiatrist, I am keenly aware of the Gordian knot binding lifestyle and physical wellness to mental wellness. Having previously worked as a researcher at Stanford University’s Sleep and Circadian Neurobiology Laboratory, I have maintained a focus on the role of lifestyle factors in psychiatric practice. I have published and presented research on sleep at multiple international conferences.

Personality & Relational Difficulties

I support individuals who experience difficulties with self-esteem, relationships, identity, or emotion regulation—often rooted in trauma, complex early life experiences, or longstanding patterns of relating. My aim is to help individuals understand these patterns and develop new ways of relating to themselves and others.

Complex & Co-occurring Conditions

Many people come to me with overlapping conditions—such as anxiety, depression, trauma, substance misuse, or personality difficulties—where standard approaches may have fallen short or in situations where things feel stuck. I specialise in rethinking 'complex' or 'treatment-resistant' presentations through integrating different perspectives and lenses.

Psychological Formulation & Psychotherapy

As part of my psychiatric practice, I work psychotherapeutically. I am not limited to one approach and integrate several evidence-based methods including:
- Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP)
- Psychodynamic and psychoanalytic approaches
- Mentalisation-Based Therapy (MBT)
- Group Analytic methods
- Cognitive and systemic elements, depending on individual needs

Physical & Mental Health Integration

With endorsement in Liaison Psychiatry, I have extensive experience working at the intersection between mental and physical health—supporting patients where emotional distress is linked with physical conditions, or where symptoms defy simple medical explanations.

My Approach

I believe psychiatry should not reduce people to diagnoses. I strive to understand each patient in the context of their life story, relationships, and personal goals. I tailor treatment to what matters most to you, whether that is managing symptoms, making sense of your experiences, or finding new direction.
