Sociopathy is a term often used to describe a pattern of behaviours and personality traits associated with antisocial tendencies, including difficulties with empathy, impulse control and relationships. It is not a formal clinical diagnosis on its own, but is commonly understood as part of Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD).
People described as having sociopathic traits may find it difficult to regulate emotions, follow social rules or maintain stable relationships. These patterns can sometimes include impulsive behaviour, difficulty considering consequences, or challenges in understanding how actions affect others.
It is important to recognise that personality traits exist on a spectrum. Not everyone with some of these characteristics will have a personality disorder. In our clinic, we often see that these patterns can develop through a combination of early life experiences, environment, attachment and individual differences in emotional regulation.
